Testing of power supply and precision air conditioning systems for data centers and server rooms

Testy klimatyzacji precyzyjnejData centers are key facilities for maintaining the continuity of business processes of many companies. For the Data Center facilities themselves, on the other hand, it is crucial to maintain a reliable, uninterruptible power supply and adequate temperature in the server room.

At PROTOTYPOWNIA, we are one of the few in Poland to manufacture resistive-reactive load banks. The LB-R line of load banks was designed for the special needs of data centers, and the devices in this series are able to simulate the operation of servers in terms of both power consumption and thermal energy generation.

Tests using load banks allow verification of the correctness of the installation at an early stage and make it possible to check all the elements critical for maintaining power supply continuity, such as: the performance of UPS power supplies, cabling including terminals and sockets (correctness of connections and selection of elements), distribution panels and power strips in server cabinets, correct operation of the main circuit breaker and protections, as well as the elements of the system upstream of the switchgear, like generators (in all possible systems) and the transformer.

Thanks to load banks testing, we can detect all those points of failure that are not detected by realizing measurements and check the actual performance of power and air conditioning system components in the Data Center. Unlike servers that typically use up to 50% of the available power, with load banks we can achieve power consumption of 100% (or 110) of the rated power available at the facility. Tests carried out in this way make it possible to verify the behavior of the entire system under emergency conditions (e.g., with only a backup power generator in operation), which makes it possible to verify that all critical components such as chillers are adequately powered.

The first tests using LB-R load banks can already be performed before the installation is taken over, which is crucial in terms of the cost of repairing any defects revealed during the test and the image losses that would result if discovered only after the production environment is up and running.

APPLICATIONS:

1. tests of the uninterruptible power system behind the switchboard: cabling, voltage distribution panels, outlets and terminals

2. tests of switchgear, including the main circuit breaker and protections

3. verification of parameters of UPS units

4. testing of components upstream the switchgear: power generators regardless of system type, power transformer and connections

5. tests of the cooling system under conditions simulating 100% occupancy of the server room, controlled power outage from the grid, etc.

2. detecting points of failure before they cause more damage

3. building a positive, confident image and less worries - the system has already been tested and will not be tested at the first peak or lack of power from the grid

4. the LB-R load banks from PROTOTYPOWNIA meet the requirements of The Uptime Institute and can be used for certification testing in server rooms

5. the cost of the test is much lower than the costs associated with repairing failures even in small server rooms
